A Concise Description of the Shots
There must be a short description of each shot to be taken written as part of the job description. This seems obvious, but you would be surprised at how many people start out a job without a list that succinctly describes the images to be executed. The obvious reason is that everyone needs to be on the same page, literally and figuratively, so that everyone’s expectations can be met. The client has certain reasons why a product needs to be featured, and the photographer needs to show that item in its best light. Problems arise when each party goes its own way and the goal of a productive shoot turns into competing agendas.
That does not mean that there have to be lengthy descriptions. There is limited space in the job description format. There is no need for a flowery description about what is to be shot when a concise description will do. For example, “Little boy with balloon at park—as per attached layout/shot list” will suffice, especially when there is an attached visual. If it happens that there is a long shot list, then add the phrase, “See attached page with shot list and layouts,” which will provide a checklist that will help the artist and client make sure all the images are accounted for. Keeping track with the concise descriptions will also help the photographer know how many shots the client really needs in order to get the job done. I love to include the phrase, “as per attached layout/ shot list,” because if there are any significant changes, alterations, or additions to the original concept, you have opened the discussion to request more in fees for the added involvement.
